As technologies advance and EV adoption grows, Audi is doing its part to help usher in a more sustainable era for luxury automobility with its ever-growing e-tron lineup. The benefits of EVs are myriad, including reduced ownership costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, a quieter ride, and new levels of performance. However, while EVs have a significantly lower environmental impact than their combustion engine counterparts, waste from lithium-ion batteries remains a concern—one that will only grow as more drivers switch from gas to electric.
Audi and its parent company Volkswagen are embracing their responsibility to help facilitate a greener automotive future by partnering with Redwood Materials to ensure more sustainable utilization of EV battery components.
Redwood already processes 6GWh worth of end-of-life batteries, equivalent to ~60,000 EV battery packs. Through the partnership with VW and Audi, Redwood will work directly with manufacturing plants and dealers to determine which batteries are nearing the end of their usable cycle and have them safely packaged and transported to the company's processing plant in Nevada. Redwood claims the ability to recuperate more than 95 percent of a battery's raw materials, including cobalt, lithium, copper, and aluminum, which it uses to remanufacture critical components like copper foil and active cathode materials for use in future cells.
"The path to a more sustainable future requires innovative solutions," stated Spencer Reeder, Audi of America's director of Government Affairs and Sustainability, in Audi's press release. "The partnership with Redwood Materials offers a groundbreaking vision for helping to ensure electric vehicles operate not only without tailpipe emissions, but with a renewable purpose."
