A few years ago, Audi Sport GmbH released a RennSport (RS) version of the A3 subcompact luxury sedan, providing an accessible entry point to the high-performance subsidiary's portfolio. After a short break during the 2021 model year, Audi has confirmed the RS 3 will return for an all-new second generation. And while we don't always get the RS variants in North America (the renowned RS 6 Avant arrived stateside for the first time last year), the RS 3 is set to launch here this summer. Here's a brief look at a few notable attributes.
- Symphonic Performance: The Audi RS 3 equips Audi's award-winning five-cylinder engine. A nine-time International Engine of the Year Award winner, the straight five's distinct 1-2-4-5-3 firing order results in an unmistakable exhaust note that some might describe as "emotional." The high-revving 401-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter powerplant mates with a sporty seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, motivating the RS 3 to 60 mph from a standstill in just 3.4 seconds.
- Enhanced Agility: The RS 3 experience is more than straight-line speed; it's about engaging on-rails driving dynamics. And the second-gen RS 3 takes its playful agility to a new level with Audi's first implementation of an RS Torque Splitter. Audi's renowned quattro all-wheel-drive system pairs seamlessly with the torque splitter to enable fully variable distribution between the rear wheels. The benefits are numerous, including mitigation of understeer, improved handling in wet conditions, and better control during fast cornering.
- Engaging Interior: The next-gen RS 3 driver-focused interior offers an immersive experience with Audi's brilliant 12.3-inch virtual cockpit. In the RS 3, Audi's fully digital gauge cluster features a new "RS Runway" mode that displays pertinent performance data "in a manner that visually resembles an airplane runway." Elsewhere in the cabin, the 8-way power-adjustable sport seats feature fine Nappa leather upholstering with RS embossing and RS-specific honeycomb stitching. And the leather-wrapped RS multifunction sport steering wheel adds a dedicated button for RS-exclusive drive modes, including RS Performance and RS Individual.
