Last year, Audi announced a partnership with Navistar to develop C-V2X (Cellular vehicle-to-everything) technology to further enhance vehicle safety. The emerging technology facilitates direct communication between vehicles, providing drivers with advanced warning in situations that current vehicle safety systems can't. Since the announcement, Audi has demonstrated C-V2X uses for school areas, construction zones, and cyclists. With back-to-school season now in full swing, the companies showcased the potential for C-V2X technology around school buses. Here's a quick overview of how it works.

Direct Vehicle Communication to Enhance Driver Alertness

The demonstration involved a school bus from Navistar's IC Bus® brand and an Audi e-tron Sportback (now the Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron). C-V2X technology allows a car and school bus to communicate autonomously, ten times per second, up to 400 yards away. As a result, the car driver can receive alerts in the instrument panel, even if the bus isn't visible—such as around a corner or over a hill. This provides more time for the driver to prepare or respond to the situation accordingly.

The school bus driver receives a similar alert simultaneously. In addition to bolstering response time, the driver can use the information to make decisions while the bus is stopped. Examples include keeping the doors closed or directing children to remain on the curb until it's safe to cross. Audi and Navistar will continue refining the technology and exploring additional use cases, such as motorcyclists, emergency vehicles, and pedestrians.
